Introduction
Form 6251 looks intimidating because it asks you to recalculate your income under a second set of federal tax rules. Its job is narrow: to work out whether the alternative minimum tax (AMT) adds to your U.S. bill.
Most returns never produce AMT. The IRS estimates 150,167 returns reported AMT for 2023, according to IRS Publication 4801.
Form 6251 belongs to U.S. individual federal income tax. Living in Australia doesn't by itself require it. You first need a U.S. filing obligation, then a situation that calls for an AMT calculation.
This guide covers what AMT is, who may need the form, how the calculation works, what to plan for, and how to file. Line references below are for tax year 2025.
Key Takeaways
- Form 6251 calculates AMT, but completing it doesn't mean you owe any.
- Your whole return drives exposure: deductions, investments, equity compensation, credits and filing status.
- The form adjusts regular income, applies an exemption and AMT rates, then compares the result with regular tax.
- Always use the current IRS form and instructions, because thresholds and line numbers change.
What Is Form 6251 and Why Does AMT Matter?
Form 6251, Alternative Minimum Tax – Individuals, runs a parallel calculation alongside your regular U.S. federal tax. According to IRS Topic 556, AMT limits certain tax benefits for high-income taxpayers so they pay at least a minimum amount of tax.
Some deductions, exclusions, income items and credits are treated differently under AMT. You pay the higher of the two results: regular tax plus any positive AMT difference.
Not an Australian return or a company filing
Form 6251 has no connection to Australian tax returns. It also isn't an entity-level calculation. A business owner should assess their personal U.S. return separately from any corporate tax obligations.
U.S. citizens and resident aliens are taxed on worldwide income, and ordinary filing rules generally apply the same way outside the United States.
Who Needs to Complete Form 6251?
Evaluate your need for Form 6251 every year. Tax software or a preparer often concludes the form isn't needed. Under the 2025 instructions, you must attach it if any of these apply:
- Form 6251 line 7 exceeds line 10.
- You claim a general business credit and the relevant Form 3800 line exceeds zero.
- You claim the qualified electric vehicle credit (Form 8834), the alternative fuel refueling property credit (Form 8911) or the prior-year minimum tax credit (Form 8801).
- The total of lines 2c through 3 is negative, and line 7 would exceed line 10 without those amounts.
Common triggers
- Incentive stock option (ISO) exercises
- Private activity bond interest
- Large capital gains
- Depreciation differences and passive activity adjustments
- Investment interest, net operating losses and certain deductions
ISOs deserve special attention. The gap between the exercise price and fair market value can create an AMT adjustment even if you haven't sold the shares.
Cross-border situations
Foreign income needs extra review. The foreign earned income exclusion (maximum $130,000 for 2025) and the foreign tax credit each have their own AMT treatment. Neither is a blanket exemption. Form 6251 can also accompany Form 1040-NR.
Finally, separate "required to attach" from "actually owing AMT." Line 11 is zero when tentative minimum tax doesn't exceed the line 10 comparator.
How Does Form 6251 Calculate AMT?
Start with the regular-tax figure
Part I starts from your Form 1040 figures, not a second copy of total income:
- Line 1a: Form 1040 line 14 less Schedule 1-A line 37
- Line 1b: line 11b less line 1a
Apply adjustments and preferences
Lines 2a to 3 add back or recalculate items:
- State and local taxes (line 2a); non-itemisers add back the standard deduction
- Investment interest, net operating losses and private activity bond interest
- ISO exercises, depreciation and passive activities
The exact adjustments vary by taxpayer, so follow the current instructions.
Alternative minimum taxable income and exemption
Line 4 combines lines 1b through 3 to give alternative minimum taxable income (AMTI). Filing status then sets your exemption and phase-out. The exemption shrinks by 25% of AMTI above the phase-out start.
| Tax year | Filing status | Exemption | Phase-out starts | 28% applies above |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Single / head of household | $88,100 | $626,350 | $239,100 |
| 2025 | Married filing jointly | $137,000 | $1,252,700 | $239,100 |
| 2025 | Married filing separately | $68,500 | $626,350 | $119,550 |
| 2026 | Single / head of household | $90,100 | $500,000 | $244,500 |
| 2026 | Married filing jointly | $140,200 | $1,000,000 | $244,500 |
| 2026 | Married filing separately | $70,100 | $500,000 | $122,250 |
These figures are in USD. The 28% breakpoint applies to taxable excess after the exemption, not gross income. Note that 2026 exemptions rise while phase-out starts fall.
Tentative minimum tax and comparison
Ordinary AMT rates are 26% up to the breakpoint and 28% above it. Part III applies 0%, 15% and 20% rates to qualified dividends and capital gains. Subtract the AMT foreign tax credit (line 8) from line 7 to get tentative minimum tax (line 9).
Line 10 is your regular tax. Line 11 is line 9 minus line 10, or zero if regular tax is higher. You only owe additional AMT when tentative minimum tax exceeds regular tax. Compute any AMT foreign tax credit on a separate AMT Form 1116 for each income category.

A simple hypothetical
The IRS's own illustration in Publication 525 uses 100 ISO shares with a $9 exercise price. The taxpayer exercises on 7 January 2025 at $14, and the rights first become transferable on 27 January 2025 at $16.
- Market value when transferable: $1,600
- Cost: $900
- Line 2i adjustment: $700
That $700 raises AMTI. The exemption is then subtracted, the rate is applied, and the result is compared with regular tax. For a modest adjustment and a taxpayer well within the exemption, AMT is often zero.
Which Adjustments Trigger AMT and How Can You Plan?
Incentive stock options
Exercising and holding ISOs can create AMT income before any sale. Track the exercise date, fair market value, holding period and eventual sale. Your employer supplies Form 3921 with the key dates and values.
The ISO holding period runs to the later of one year after transfer or two years after grant. Modelling exercise size and timing beforehand is lawful planning. Changing transactions to manage AMT can still create cash-flow, investment and ordinary-tax consequences.
Deductions, depreciation, losses and investments
Items that may be limited or recalculated:
- State and local taxes
- Depreciation (line 2l) and passive activities (line 2m)
- Investment interest (a second Form 4952 under AMT rules)
- Net operating losses, where the alternative tax NOL deduction generally has a 90% limit
- Specified private activity bond interest
Keep separate regular-tax and AMT records where asset bases or timing differ.
Foreign income and credits
Foreign tax paid doesn't automatically eliminate AMT. Claiming the exclusion on Form 2555 requires the Foreign Earned Income Tax Worksheet for line 7, and taxes on excluded income can't also earn a credit. U.S. AMT and Australian tax are separate analyses, so coordinate them to avoid inconsistent reporting.

Prior-year credits and limits
Form 8801 calculates a credit for prior-year AMT. It applies to AMT from deferral items (timing differences), not exclusion items (permanent differences). File it only if line 21 exceeds zero.
No universal strategy avoids AMT. Planning means lawful timing, accurate modelling, documentation and knowing whether an adjustment is temporary or permanent. Lowering AMT can raise regular tax, capital gains exposure or Australian complexity, so review major transactions first.

- ISO records and Form 3921
- Depreciation schedules and loss records
- Foreign income and tax records
- Credit worksheets
Attach and report
Attach Form 6251 to Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR. It isn't a standalone return. For 2025, line 11 goes to Schedule 2, line 2. Schedule 2 adds lines 1z and 2 on line 3, and that total goes to Form 1040 line 17. Confirm line numbers each year.

Australia-based filers with a tax home abroad get an automatic extension for 2025 returns from 15 April to 15 June 2026. Interest on unpaid tax still runs from the original due date.

Frequently Asked Questions
What tax form is used for AMT?
Individuals generally use IRS Form 6251. Specialised credits or business situations may need other forms and worksheets, such as Form 8801 or Form 3800.
Who needs to file IRS Form 6251?
Taxpayers with certain income, deductions, investments, equity compensation, losses or credits may need to complete or attach it. The current IRS instructions set the requirement.
Where can I get Form 6251 and its instructions (PDF)?
Download both from the IRS "About Form 6251" page. Select the version for the tax year you're filing.
What is the alternative minimum tax (AMT)?
AMT is a separate federal calculation that treats certain deductions, exclusions, income and credits differently. It determines whether additional tax is due beyond regular tax.
How can I avoid paying alternative minimum tax?
No method is guaranteed. Planning around option exercises, timing differences, deductions, credits and records can reduce surprises where current law allows.
Where is the AMT reported on Form 1040?
Form 6251 line 11 flows to Schedule 2, then to Form 1040 line 17 for 2025. Confirm the line in that year's Form 1040 instructions.
