This guide covers the dates for the 2025 return (filed in 2026), how to file Form 4868, what to pay and when, and the separate obligations an extension leaves untouched. Amounts are in US dollars unless noted.
Key Takeaways
- Most eligible filers request six more months using Form 4868 or an eligible extension payment.
- Estimated tax is still due on the original deadline, extension or not.
- Qualifying taxpayers abroad get an automatic two-month filing extension to June 15.
- FBAR, state returns and estimated tax run on their own clocks.
What a Federal 1040 Extension Does
An extension moves the filing deadline, not the payment deadline. Interest and late-payment penalties can still apply to any unpaid balance after the April due date.
Who Uses Form 4868
Form 4868 covers Forms 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR and 1040-SS. It generally adds six months. Always check the current-year form and instructions before filing.
Green-card holders who held lawful permanent residence at any time during the year are generally treated as U.S. residents and file Form 1040. Taxpayers living abroad may qualify for an automatic two-month filing concession, subject to separate IRS conditions.
Form 4868 vs. Form 7004
Form 7004 is for entity returns: corporations (1120), partnerships (1065) and estates or trusts (1041). Using it for an individual return is a mistake. Individuals use Form 4868.
Important Federal 1040 Extension Deadlines
For most calendar-year taxpayers, the 2025 return is due 15 April 2026, with payment due the same day. Weekend and holiday due dates move to the next business day.
| Obligation | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard filing and payment | 15 April 2026 | Form 4868 due by this date |
| Standard extended filing | 15 October 2026 | Filing only, not payment |
| Automatic overseas extension | 15 June 2026 | File and pay; interest runs from April |
| Overseas Form 4868 to October | File by 15 June 2026 | Tick line 8 |
| Discretionary overseas extension | 15 December 2026 | Written request by 15 October |

Living in Australia
Qualifying citizens and resident aliens get an automatic extension to 15 June. You qualify if, on the regular due date, you:
- Live outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico, with your main place of business or post of duty outside them, or
- Serve in the military or naval service outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico
Attach a statement explaining that you qualify.
IRS guidance confirms that interest still runs from April. Late-payment penalties generally begin from 15 June for qualifying filers.
To reach 15 October, file Form 4868 by 15 June and tick line 8. That adds four months of filing time, not payment time.
The 15 December Option
Taxpayers abroad can ask for two more months beyond the six-month extension. It is not automatic. Send an explanatory letter by 15 October. It is unavailable if you have an approved Form 2350, and the IRS generally contacts you only if the request is denied.
Confirm eligibility against current IRS guidance.
Dates an Extension Does Not Move
- FBAR (FinCEN 114): due 15 April, with an automatic extension to 15 October and no request needed. It is filed separately with FinCEN.
- Form 8938: attached to your return and due with it, including extensions. It does not replace the FBAR.
- 2026 estimated tax: 15 April, 15 June, 15 September 2026 and 15 January 2027.
- State returns: California grants an automatic extension to 15 October. New York requires Form IT-370, and a federal extension does not substitute.
Matching dates do not merge obligations. 15 June can be the overseas concession, a 1040-NR deadline or an estimated-tax instalment.
How to File Form 4868
Gather Your Details
- Names, address and SSNs (including your spouse's for a joint request)
- Estimated total tax liability for the year
- Withholding and estimated payments already made
- Foreign income details and any amount already paid
Complete the Form
Lines 4 to 9 matter most:
- Line 4: estimated total tax liability, not the balance owing.
- Line 5: total payments made.
- Line 6: line 4 minus line 5, or zero if payments exceed liability.
- Line 7: the amount you are paying now.
- Line 8: tick if you are a U.S. citizen or resident living overseas.
- Line 9: for certain 1040-NR filers without wages subject to withholding.

Use the current IRS form. If the IRS later finds your estimate unreasonable, the extension can be treated as invalid.
Choose a Filing Method
- IRS Free File: Electronic extension requests have no income limit.
- Free File Fillable Forms: Form 4868 is available for the 2025 tax year.
- Software or a tax professional: Both can e-file the form.
- Payment-based extension: Pay electronically through Direct Pay, EFTPS or a card and designate it an extension payment. No separate form is needed.
Direct Pay needs a U.S. bank routing number, so it may not suit Australian-based filers. EFTPS is limited to existing individual users.
Paper Filing from Australia
| Situation | Address |
|---|---|
| With payment | Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 1303, Charlotte, NC 28201-1303, USA |
| Without payment | Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Austin, TX 73301-0215, USA |
A timely foreign postmark qualifies. Private delivery services cannot deliver to P.O. boxes. Keep a copy and proof of mailing, and confirm addresses in the current instructions.
After You Submit
Keep the e-file acknowledgement, payment confirmation number and mailing evidence. Then finish the full Form 1040 and file by your extended deadline.
Paying Your Tax and Avoiding Extension Mistakes
Estimate and Pay by April
Account for withholding, estimated payments, foreign income and foreign tax credits. No credit or deduction is allowed for foreign taxes on income excluded under the foreign earned income exclusion.
Report in USD. Use the spot rate when you receive, pay or accrue an item. The IRS has no official rate but accepts consistently applied posted rates. Its yearly average for 2025 is AUD 1.551 per USD.
If you expect a refund, no extension payment is needed. If you owe, interest and penalties start from the original due date.
Penalties and Interest
- Failure to file: generally 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%. For returns due in 2026, the minimum after 60 days is the smaller of $525 or 100% of unpaid tax, per IRS penalty rules.
- Failure to pay: generally 0.5% per month, up to 25%. An extension does not stop it.
- Overlap: the filing penalty is reduced by the payment penalty for overlapping months.
- Interest: the October to December 2026 rate is 7% annually, compounded daily.

Reasonable-cause relief is possible but not automatic. Lack of funds alone is not enough. Paying at least 90% of total tax by the due date, then the balance with the return, can support relief for late payment during the extension.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming an extension is automatic without filing or paying
- Using Form 7004 instead of Form 4868
- Waiting until October to pay
- Omitting foreign income
- Not keeping proof of submission
- Treating the federal extension as covering state returns, FBAR or other international forms
If you need more time to meet the bona fide residence or physical presence tests, Form 2350 addresses that. It does not extend payment.
